La Vallée des Singes

Romagne, France 4.6 (8.243)

1 of 11 zoos in France have Pygmy Chimpanzee

La Vallée des Singes in France is home to the country's only group of bonobos, also known as pygmy chimpanzees.

In 2011, La Vallée des Singes introduced a group of nine bonobos, comprising five females and four males, aged between 7 and 43 years. This addition made it the sole zoo in France to house this critically endangered species.

The bonobos reside on a lush, one-hectare island, complemented by a 900-square-meter indoor facility, providing them with the largest habitat of its kind in Europe. Since their arrival, the group has experienced multiple births, including a notable event in June 2022 when a 20-year-old female named Khaya gave birth to her third daughter.

As a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), La Vallée des Singes actively participates in the European Endangered Species Program (EEP), contributing to the conservation and breeding efforts for bonobos. Visitors can observe these primates in a setting that closely mirrors their natural environment, enhancing both educational and conservation experiences.
