About Parc Animalier Charles-Édouard Beltremieux
The Parc animalier Charles-Edouard Beltremieux is a free four-hectare animal park in the middle of La Rochelle, named after a former curator of the city's Museum who also served as its mayor. It was formally created in 1950 but ducks and swans were kept here from 1890 and aviaries were built soon after; by January 2022 it held some 360 animals, not counting the migrants that break their journey on its ponds.
Local breeds are the point of it - Poitou goats, Poitou donkeys and a Jersey cow - and most of the animals move freely or semi-freely across the water, lawns, paths and trees, with only some kept in enclosures or aviaries. Visitors are asked not to feed them: in January 2022 the donkey Cachou had to be put on a diet because too many people ignored the rule.
