The Espace Zoologique de Saint-Martin-la-Plaine in the Loire began as a refuge for seized and abandoned wild animals and still works that way: its association Tonga Terre d'Accueil takes in animals confiscated by the authorities, and it was the first refuge of its kind in France. The park is best known for its gorillas, and holds tigers, lions, striped hyenas, Barbary macaques, sun bears, wolves and, newly arrived, giraffes.
Visiting is on foot only - no scooters, skates or balls - dogs are not admitted, and picnicking is allowed at tables inside the park.
