The Aquarien- und Terrarienverein im Biologiezentrum Bustedt runs a permanent aquarium and terrarium exhibition at Gut Bustedt in Hiddenhausen, an estate surrounded by water that works as a biology and education centre for about 25,000 visitors a year. Fifteen display tanks show the underwater landscapes of streams, still waters, wetlands and rainforest, from a marine tank of clownfish, anemones and corals to a three-metre piranha tank, a tidal aquarium that runs a six-hour ebb and flood cycle for mudskippers and mangrove crabs, rainforest terraria of poison dart frogs, and a paludarium of Vietnamese crocodile newts the club is breeding as a conservation project.
Information boards at each tank explain the animals, plants and habitats. It is a volunteer association rather than a commercial attraction and publishes no admission price; it is open to visitors on Sunday mornings and Tuesday evenings.
Visitors can park at the designated parking area near the entrance of Gut Bustedt. Parking is free, making it convenient for guests to visit without worrying about fees. It is advisable to arrive early on weekends, as the parking lot can fill up quickly during busy events.
