About Artis Zoo
ARTIS in Amsterdam opened in 1838 and is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands, a monumental park in the middle of the city that is also a botanical garden, an aquarium, a planetarium and a museum. Its nineteenth-century buildings are listed and the grounds carry old trees alongside the enclosures. Among the animals are Asian elephants, lions, jaguars, chimpanzees, western lowland gorillas, mandrills, Sulawesi crested macaques, a reticulated giraffe herd, South American tapirs, Hudson Bay wolves and California sea lions, with African penguins, Chilean flamingos, a southern cassowary and a large aquarium building restored in recent years.
