L'Ile aux Papillons at La Gueriniere on Noirmoutier is the largest butterfly greenhouse in France, held at 26 degrees and planted as tropical forest, with hundreds of tropical butterflies flying free among the visitors - glasswings, paper kites and tailed jays among them. Nearly all arrive as chrysalises from breeding farms in their countries of origin, which is how the house stocks itself without taking from wild populations; a butterfly lives about a fortnight, so imports stop before the autumn closure and the last insects are seen flying in early December.
A video explains the life cycle, and a separate aviary holds rainbow lorikeets, which breed on site. The house opened in 2000 and closes for the winter, reopening in April.
Visitors can park in the designated parking area near the entrance of L'île aux Papillons. Parking is typically free, making it convenient for families and groups. It's advisable to arrive early during peak seasons to secure a good spot.
