Parque Zoologico de Ciego de Avila

The Parque Zoologico de Ciego de Avila opened on 4 April 1962, created by agreement between the local government and the youth and party organisations as a place to show animals and give children, young people and adults somewhere to go. It opened with a range of species, a large pine wood, a kiosk, a small funfair and a swimming pool. From 1987 a pioneers' palace ran inside the grounds, giving vocational classes to primary and secondary pupils.

The site lies low and flooded often, so it was rebuilt in 1976, 1987 and 1988, and from 2001 the provincial authorities began a full remodelling and enlargement to a design by the architect Mirtha Valeron Izarri.
