Reserva Biológica Campanarios de Azaba

Reserva Biologica Campanarios de Azaba lies in the dehesa of western Salamanca near the Portuguese border, run by the Fundacion Naturaleza y Hombre as a rewilding and research estate and recognised as the first entomological reserve in Spain. The Mediterranean dehesa is a global biodiversity hotspot, and the reserve keeps checklists of everything recorded on it - 96 bird species alone, alongside mammals and bats, reptiles, amphibians, fungi and invertebrates.

Common genets, Egyptian mongooses, roe deer and wild boar live in the oak woodland, and the photography hides draw cinereous and Egyptian vultures, red kites and black storks. Visits are guided walks of half a day from the Biological Station, with a talk on the conservation work and a tasting of local Iberian produce halfway round; there is also a lodge and hides for wildlife photographers.
