Parque Zoologico Bartolome Maso Marquez

The Parque Zoologico Bartolome Maso Marquez stands in the centre of Manzanillo in Granma province, on Calle 1 de Mayo between General Benitez and Concepcion. The grounds were laid out in 1925 by Jose Ramirez, head of the local rice growers, who raised a statue there to Bartolome Maso Marquez, a leader of Cuba's war of independence and the name the park still carries.

Enclosures were added later and the first animals were shown around 1945. The park has since been fully restored and is now divided into three parts - a seating area, a play area and the zoo itself - with a staff of thirty. Its purpose is explicitly social and educational, aimed first at children, and it concentrates on the wildlife of its own region.
