About Monteverde Butterfly Gardens
The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching visitors about Costa Rica's insects and arachnids for more than thirty years, and is built around changing how people see them. It holds up to 30 butterfly species across four habitat gardens, more than 20 species of live insects and arachnids in its nature centre, a rearing chamber where caterpillars are turning into butterflies, and an active leafcutter ant colony.
It publishes those counts rather than a species list, because the butterfly population turns over constantly. Every admission includes an hour-long guided tour in English or Spanish, and the ticket stays valid for repeat visits for as long as you are in Monteverde.
Parking is available near the entrance of the Monteverde Butterfly Gardens. It is free for all visitors, but spaces can fill up quickly during peak times, so arriving early is recommended.
