About Castellar Zoo
Zoo de Castellar at Castellar de la Frontera in Cadiz is a private animal rescue centre rather than a conventional zoo. It has been working since 1998 and opened to the public in 2002, set up to take in animals seized by the authorities from the exotic-pet black market - creatures nobody else would take responsibility for. Its residents include Bengal tigers transferred from other zoos, a lioness, a melanistic leopard, a fennec fox confiscated by the Guardia Civil and a sulcata tortoise rescued from abandonment, alongside birds, other cats, primates and reptiles.
The park is open every day of the year and funds itself through admission, annual passes, donations and an animal sponsorship scheme.
Visitors can park in the designated parking area near the entrance of the zoo. Parking is paid, so be sure to bring cash or a credit card to cover the fee. It's advisable to arrive early to secure a good parking spot, especially during weekends and holidays.
