About Centro de Rescate Las Pumas
Las Pumas Rescue Center and Sanctuary sits on the old Hacienda La Pacifica just outside Canas in Guanacaste, and was founded in 1989 by Werner and Lilly Hagnauer, a Swiss couple who had begun taking in wild animals losing their forest to deforestation. It has two halves. The Rescue Center is closed to visitors: it takes in 350 to 400 wild animals a year across some 70 species, treats and rehabilitates them, and returns 40 to 50 percent of them to the wild.
The Sanctuary is open every day and holds the 170 animals from 27 species that cannot go back - wild cats, monkeys, sloths, deer, peccaries, parrots, toucans and turtles, most of them injured, orphaned or confiscated from illegal captivity. Each has a documented rescue story, and the visit is built around them. A small farm built in memory of Lilly Hagnauer lets children meet guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens, a goat and a sheep. The centre is run by the Hagnauer Foundation and funded mainly by admissions.
Visitors can park in the designated parking area near the entrance of the zoo. Parking is free, but it is advisable to arrive early during peak visiting times to secure a spot.
