About Leintalzoo Schwaigern
The Leintalzoo is a privately run park between Leingarten and Schwaigern, opened in 1980 and grown out of a society founded to house rescued great apes. It shows around 250 animals in some 40 species on marshy ground with natural lakes and biotopes, and its guiding idea puts the individual animal and the care of neglected animals ahead of species collection.
Its best-known residents are one of the largest chimpanzee groups in Germany, more than 30 animals of every age, alongside gibbons, capuchins and mandrills. There are parrots, ibises, water turtles, free-ranging peafowl and chickens, and a domestic section with mules, guinea pigs, rabbits, horses, ponies, sheep, goats and pigs. A nature trail with an underwater viewing pane and a bee stand runs on from the adventure playground and the vegetarian cafeteria. About 50,000 people visit each year.
