About Monkey World
Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre at Longthorns near Wareham in Dorset is a rescue centre rather than a conventional zoo, home to more than 250 primates and nothing else. It runs the largest group of chimpanzees outside Africa across four social groups, three orang-utan groups including a nursery, and five gibbon species. Most of its animals were taken from the European pet trade, from biomedical laboratories or from illegal smuggling - over 60 of its capuchins came from a laboratory in Chile in 2008, and its marmosets from British pet keeping. It works with foreign governments to rescue and rehome primates and campaigns against the UK primate pet trade.
