ZOO Planckendael at Muizen near Mechelen is the country cousin of Antwerp Zoo - both are run by the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp - and is laid out as a landscape zoo divided by continent, with large open stretches deliberately left unmanaged so wild flowers grow through the year. Asia holds Asian elephants, Indian rhinoceros, Asiatic lions, snow leopards, red pandas and Sumatran orangutans; Africa is built around a savannah with Kordofan giraffes, Grevy's zebra, addax and mhorr gazelle; Oceania has koalas, Tasmanian devils and eastern grey kangaroos.
The bird collection is the largest part of the zoo, running to more than seventy species across ibises, herons, pigeons, ducks, waders, cranes, vultures and ratites. Planckendael also houses the Society's Centre for Research and Conservation.
