Poznan runs two zoos under one management. The Old Zoo on Jezyce, founded in 1871, is one of the oldest continuously operating zoos in the world and covers 5.24 hectares of listed Victorian viviary buildings - a grotto of 1906, the old lion house that is now a museum, the 1927 monkey pavilion. The New Zoo on Biala Gora, opened in 1974, is the second largest zoo in Poland at 120.68 hectares of hilly woodland with six lakes, and is known for one of the richest collections of birds of prey and owls in Europe.
Its rarities include Bawean and Visayan spotted deer, Visayan warty pig, Grevy's zebra, Rothschild's giraffe, Siberian tiger, African elephant, European mink, marbled polecat and both Sichuan and golden takin. The zoo breeds Visayan spotted deer successfully and has released captive-bred golden eagles back into the wild in Podlasie.
