In June 2008, Copenhagen Zoo unveiled a new Elephant House, crafted by Foster + Partners, to provide a stimulating environment for its Indian elephants. The facility features two glass-domed enclosures embedded into the landscape, offering both indoor and outdoor spaces that mimic natural habitats. The design includes heated floors to maintain foot health and a large paddock with a deep pool, allowing the elephants to engage in natural behaviors like mud bathing and swimming.
The zoo actively participates in European breeding programs for Asian elephants. Notably, on February 20, 2024, a female calf was born to 16-year-old Maha Kumari and fathered by Fahim, a male elephant who arrived at the zoo in December 2021. This birth was part of a coordinated effort to support the conservation of this endangered species.
Visitors can observe the elephants in their expansive habitat, which includes both indoor and outdoor areas designed to encourage natural behaviors. The Elephant House's thoughtful design and the zoo's commitment to conservation provide an enriching experience for both the elephants and guests.
